How does vision insurance work?

Unlike major medical insurance policies that may provide unlimited benefits after a certain co-pays and deductibles are met, most vision insurance plans are discount plans or wellness benefit plans that provide specific benefits and discounts for an annual premium.

Vision insurance work much like gift cards. They can be used to cover much of the cost of basic eyewear, or they can be used to make premium eyewear products and enhancements significantly more affordable.

What is the cost of vision insurance?

Vision insurance costs vary, depending upon how the program is designed. Costs also may vary based on your state of residence.

Typically, you pay for group vision insurance through payroll deductions. But if you are self-employed or your employer does not offer vision insurance, you can purchase an individual vision insurance plan that you will typically be billed monthly or annually. It's a good idea to compare several vision insurance providers to make sure you get the best value for the eye care benefits you want. Vision insurance can range from $15 to $30 monthly depending on the type of plan you choose.
